SmartyKat Cat Toy Packaging
For this project, we were asked to redesign the package for a common product found at Target. I chose to do the packaging for SmartyKat catnip mouse toys. I thought it deserved packaging that was more fun and eye-catching and also brought attention to the qualities that make the toy itself unique. I was inspired by the idea of the mice toys looking like they were popping out of a block of cheese as found the color palette made it stand out when on the self. This packaging style also removes the potentially dangerous plastic ties that are traditionally used to hold the toys to the packaging label.
Iteration
First, I sketched out the original design look for the piece (including the front and side pieces). I then had to measure the dimension of the mice toys before laying out the needed dominions of the packing. I wanted to make sure the design was small enough to fit nicely on a wall when hung but also allowed the mice toys to fit snuggly without needing any extra pieces to keep them in place.
Once I chose the color palette and typeface that best fit the project, I then created a base outline of the design. Once this was compete, I filled in the design with color before taking it to a laser printer to have it cut out. This process was repeated multiple times until the sizing was just right. I then put the packaging together before placing the toys inside and photographing the piece in a light room.
